What is a heat pump hot water service?
A heat pump hot water service is an energy-efficient solution that utilizes electricity to move heat from the air or to warm water for your home. This technology effectively extracts heat from the environment, even in lower temperatures, and transfers to the water tank. As a result, it can greatly lower energy expenses compared to conventional electric and gas water heaters.
There are two varieties of heat pump hot water services commonly used in homes, which are as follows:
Split systems
A split system heat pump hot water service is a water heating solution that utilizes a heat pump to draw heat from the ambient air and transfer it to water, making it an efficient method for heating water for household use.
The term "split system" refers to its two main components: the outdoor unit (the heat pump) and a separate collection tank. In this setup, cold water is drawn from the bottom of the collection tank, heated in the heat pump, and then delivered to the top of the tank as hot water.
This design offers the benefit of allowing the collection tank and heat pump to be installed in different locations, and it enables individual servicing of both components.
Integrated system
(All-in-one)
An integrated heat pump hot water service functions like a split system heat pump, but in this arrangement, the heat pump is located on top of the tank.
This design usually offers a lower price than a split system pump, and because it doesn't require pipes between the units, installation costs are often lower.
Why switch to heat pump hot water?
Heat pump hot water services are the energy efficient water heating alternative to traditional electric storage and gas hot water services. Installing a heat pump can save you up to 70% on your water heating costs.
This efficiency means they are the most environmentally friendly option to heat water.
Because of this, the Australian and Victorian state governments are providing rebates to insensitive installing a heat pump over a traditional electric or gas water heater.
The Victorian government is also proposing a change to the minimum standards for rental homes from the 30th of October 2025 which will require rental provided to replace all gas and inefficient electric hot water services with energy efficient heat pumps when their current appliance reaches end of life.
This highlights that heat pump hot water services are the future of water heating in Australia.
